Nobel Laureate and Climate Change Task Force member Professor Mohan Monasinghe spoke at the University of Southampton's Multidisciplinary Research Week on 18 March, 2013, discussing climate change, poverty and over-consumption.
Monasinghe said "over-consumption" is driven by several points, namely "we are using as a human race more than the equivalent of one planet earth, 1.5 planets earth equivalent (and) of this consumption, 80% is done by the 1.4 billion people who are the richest on the planet."
"So if the richest people on the planet are consuming more than one planet earth, where are the resources to raise the 2 billion out of poverty?"
