The New York, USA-based Blacksmith Institute has received a Green Star Award in the Organization categoryin recognition of its strong support to the United Nations system for responding to environmental emergencies.
The 2009 winners of the Green Star Awards were Mike Cowing of the United Nations Environment Programme; The Center for Scientific Support in Disaster Situations (CENACID) of Paraná Federal University in Brazil; Spiez Laboratory of Switzerland; the Government of the Netherlands; and the Government of Sweden.
The Green Cross International Board met on 31 August, 2012, in Geneva, Switzerland. Attendees included Green Cross International Founding President Mikhail Gorbachev, Chairman Jan Kulczyk, President Alexander Likhotal, Green Cross Japan Founding President Shoo Iwasaki, Green Cross Switzerland President Sander Mallien, Green Cross Russia President Sergei Baranovsky, Green Cross Burkina Faso President Ousséni Diallo and Green Cross Brazil President Celso Claro.
20 years after the 1992 Earth Summit, the world's focus returns to Rio in the search for solutions to the challenges facing our planet and its people. The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 20-22 June 2012.
The event also marks the 20th anniversary since civil society delegates to the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio called on Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mikhail Gorbachev to create Green Cross International.
