The programme focuses on the environmental consequences of war and conflicts. The main focus has been in Russia on the environmentally-responsible destruction of conventional and chemical weapons stockpiles. Furthermore, it has organised returning national nuclear and chemical dialogues, military base clean up and conversion to civilian use.
One of the most important achievements is that local communities have acquired a better understanding of the demilitarisation projects and can be realistic in their demands for and participation in development strategies for their regions.
In the USA the programme is instrumental in awareness raising and advocacy for the use of greener technology in the military, greater awareness among US citizens of the chemical weapons destruction programme in the USA and higher budgets for demilitarisation activities in the Congress and Senate.
The Programme is presently being refocused and will widen its geographical orientation and sub themes.
The national organisations involved in this international GCI program are Green Cross Russia, Global Green USA and Green Cross Switzerland. Green Cross Switzerland manages the program for GCI. The program has an advisory board under chairmanship of Global Green USA.
