Green Cross Spain has produced a yearbook on Sport and Sustainability to document their work in linking the sport world with Sustainable Development during 2008. The yearbook highlights the most important events as well as announcements, legislative development and initiatives that have been arising during the year.
Arguably the largest and most important event that took place last year in the world of sport was the Olympic Summer Games in Beijing, for which the organisers set the goal of introducing sustainability as one of the challenges to face. The yearbook takes this important event into account, including a chapter evaluating how well this challenge of sustainability was met. Another event of focus in 2008 also included as a chapter in the yearbook is the city of Madrid's candidacy for hosting the 2016 Olympic Games, which will be continued to be monitored until the host city decision is made.
The unique focus on this intersecting area of sport and sustainability is based on the idea that sports require the utilization of natural resources (water, energy, ground...) as well as looking at ways of building and managing facilities and infrastructure and organizing sport events and competitions in a sustainable manner. In addition to the yearbook, GC Spain also produces a "Sustainable Sport" e-newsletter covering the main national and international news, which is sent out every two months.
