This year the theme of World Water Day will be ''Clean Water for a Healthy World." The overall goal of the 2010 campaign is to raise the profile of water quality at the political level so that water quality considerations are made alongside those of water quantity.

This year’s theme is an integral part of GCI’s water activities, particularly the Right to Water campaign, which promotes access to a reliable and safe supply of water for essential human consumption and basic sanitation as a universal human right that should be recognised by all nations.

GCI is also focusing on World Water Day through its partnership with Pureology. Pureology and Green Cross National Offices are planning activities around the world to highlight the importance of water conservation and promoting the idea of having World Water Day everyday. Over 1.1 billion people do not have access to drinkable water, leaving roughly one sixth of the world’s population at risk of contracting fatal diseases and illnesses. The new GCI Smart Water for Green Schools project, supported by Pureology, will aim to improve the health and well-being of school children of 40 schools in the pilot phase in four different river basins across the globe.

The international observance of World Water Day is an initiative that grew out of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro.
