wwforum-logo_2World Water Forum
Marseille, France

Every three years since 1997, the World Water Forum mobilises creativity, innovation, competence and know-how in favour of water. It gathers all stakeholders around today’s local, regional and global issues that cannot be undertaken without all stakeholders into a common framework of goals and concrete targets to reach.

The goal of the 6th World Water Forum is to tackle the challenges our world is facing and to bring water high on all political agendas. There will be no sustainable development while the water issues remain unsolved. Everywhere on the planet, for all and everyone, the Right to Water (recognised by 189 states at the UN one year ago) must be guaranteed and implemented.

Green Cross International will be an active participant in the Forum, raising awareness on the importance of the UN Watercourses Convention and promoting the Smart Water for Green Schools model of providing people with access to safe drinking water and sanitation.

rio20-logo-2UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20)
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development marks the 20th anniversary of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and has the objective to secure renewed political commitment for sustainable development, assess the progress to date and the remaining gaps in the implementation of the outcomes of the major summits on sustainable development, and address new and emerging challenges

The Conference will focus on two themes: (a) a green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication; and (b) the institutional framework for sustainable development.

The event also marks the 20th anniversary since civil society delegates to the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio called on Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mikhail Gorbachev to create Green Cross International, a nongovernmental organization that would respond to the combined threats of security, environmental degradation and poverty. Green Cross International was founded the next year, 1993.
